What Causes Monocular Diplopia

January 12, 2021 By //  by Soham Palmer

It is common to suffer from binocular diplopia, but monocular diplopia is rare, and some people face that problem. In monocular diplopia, the patient faces double vision with one eye; when the patient focuses on any objects, it seems it double.

Today I will provide you complete detail about monocular diplopia causes, which will help you identify their reasons.

How can you know you are suffering from monocular diplopia?

How can you know you are suffering from monocular diplopia

Diplopia can be monocular and binocular, but how can one know that he is suffering from monocular diplopia, but not with binocular diplopia.

It is quite simple, when you feel double images of the observing objects, close your eyes and open one eye to see the object; if double images vanish, close that eye and open the other eye, you will see the double image with one eye only.

What are the symptoms of Monocular diplopia?

There are some possible causes of monocular diplopia, such as given below.

When you feel that you see two images of the same object, you may get confused in some cases, and you will feel blurry images.

If you see a horizontal, you feel the two images as side by side, but when you see them vertically, you feel like objects are placed on one another, and sometimes you feel the images are displaced from one another.

What are the causes of Monocular diplopia?

There are several causes of monocular diplopia; some of them are given below.

Change in the shape of the cornea

You may suffer monocular diplopia due to a change in the shape of the cornea. The double vision problem occurs when the lining of objects begins to grow and create a bulge in a cone shape. Due to that shape, you may face a blurry image or double vision.

The irregular shape of an eye

The irregular shape of an eye

Sometimes with age or due to any other reason, the curvature and shape of the patient’s eye become irregular, which may cause double vision and blurred vision.

Cataract

Normally, lenses in our eye are clear, but sometimes cataract causes our body to grow foggy and cloudy with time. It can cause a problem in your vision, such as double vision or blurred vision, if it becomes severe.

Displacement of lens

Monocular diplopia also causes displacement of the lens from its position, or change in the lens’s shape may cause double or blurred vision.

Pterygium

It can be the primary reason for the monocular diplopia; in the start, fleshy growth on the tissues covers the eyeballs and eyelids with time. It causes a problem in vision, such as double vision or blurred vision.

Dry eyes

The eyes need to produce lubricant fluid, which makes our eyes comfortable and smoothly performs their functions.

If your eyes do not produce enough lubricant fluid, it may cause your vision problems, such as double vision.

Final Thoughts: When you see two images of the same object, monocular diplopia is only with your one eye. It is rare than binocular diplopia. There are some reasons such as a change in the shape of the eye, lens, dry eye, cataract, and displacement of the lens from their position. If you need more info, then look at this site.
